How did the Battle of El Alamein begin?
General Montgomery staged a massive frontal attack against Rommel’s forces in Egypt.
Rommel fought back but was eventually forced back.
What was Operation Torch?
As Rommel retreated West, Eisenhower’s army sandwiched him between his & Montgomery’s forces. Rommel’s forces were crushed by May 1943
What made seizing the USSR so difficult for the Germans?
Their advances were held up at Leningrad and Moscow. The bitter winter also stalled them.
How did the Battle of Stalingrad begin?
At the start of the summer, Hitler ordered his troops to seize oil fields and take Stalingrad.
The Luftwaffe bombed the city and went on to control 90% of it.
What led to the Germans surrender at the Battle of Stalingrad?
Soviet soldiers surrounded the city & cut off their supplies. The winter also froze soldiers, but Hitler refused to order a retreat. German soldiers surrendered and were pushed westward.
How did Mussolini lose power?
British and American forces invaded and took Sicily, Italy. Victor Emmanuel III had Mussolini arrested & shortly after, Italy surrendered.
How did Mussolini get his power back?
Germans took Northern Italy and put Mussolini back in power. Germans eventually retreated Northward but fighting in Italy would not stop until Germany fell.
How did the war affect America at home?
Factories entered into wartime production (producing boots, guns, bullets). 17-18 million people got jobs at this time.
Consumer goods also had to be severely rationed.
How did propaganda influence younger citizens of Allied nations?
Propaganda inspired youngsters to collect scrap metal in the USSR and to save change for war bonds in America.
How did propaganda have a negative effect in the US?
Japanese were viewed as the enemy and rounded up into internment camps.
How did Allied forces prepare for D-Day?
They had secret meetings in Britain, gathered thousands of troops, and set up a fake army in Calais to trick the Germans.
What was D-Day code-named and what was it’s outcome?
Code-name: Operation Overlord
Troops stormed the beaches & made it to Paris within two months, despite heavy losses.
How did Hitler handle the possibility of a war on two fronts?
Allied forces moved in from the West & Soviets on the East. Hitler decided to attack the West, splitting the British and American forces.
What was the Battle of the Bulge?
Germans took the American forces by surprise, but they recovered & pushed the Germans back.
What was the pace of the war’s end in Europe?
After the Battle of the Bulge, the war quickly came to an end. Berlin was seized & German eventually surrendered unconditionally.
