A

A

Britain sent General Bernard Montgomery to take control of North Africa. Rommel and his German army dug in at El Alamein and fought back. With support of General Dwight. D Eisenhower and his 100,000 troops, they crushed Rommel’s army in Operation Torch. Turning point of the war in Northern Africa.

What was the Battle of Stalingrad?

A

A battle between the Soviet Union and Germany in Stalingrad. Germany sent bombers and weakened the Soviets. However, Soviet troops launched a counter attack and trapped German forces inside Stalingrad and cut off their supplies. The Soviet Union gained control of Stalingrad, but lost most of the city and thousands of troops as a result. Germany lost 100,000 troops and went on the defensive. URBAN WARFARE!

What was the Invasion of Italy?

A

Roosevelt and Churchill ignored Stalin, and decided to conquer Italy. They first gained control of Sicily and toppled Mussolini from power. Italy surrendered, but Germany gained control of northern Italy and fought back. Eventually, Roosevelt and Churchill gained control of Italy and Mussolini was captured and killed by Italian Resistance Fighters.

A

They were treated badly, and seen as the enemy. They were called “aliens”. They were sent to relocation camps despite most of the Japanese people being born in America and fighting in the war.

A

King of Italy. Orders Mussolini to be arrested. Mussolini will escape from the help of the Germans, and will be Hitler’s Puppet in the norther part of Italy. However, he is killed as discussed earlier.

A

A meeting in Tehran between the Big Three where they agree to attack Germany through France. Churchill disagrees. He wants to go through the Balkans. However, FDR agrees hoping that the Soviet Union will help America later with Japan.

A

Called Operation Overlord. Largest sea born invasion. Allies landed in Normandy, France. Gave the allies a foothold in France to fight against Germany.

A

Another meeting by the Big Three. The occupation of Germany is decided. Stalin vaguely commits to free elections in Eastern Europe.

A

He committed suicide in Berlin and Germany surrendered.

A

May 8th, Germany surrenders and the war is over in Europe.

A

The Big Four now, France added, meet to decide what will happen. Germany divided into four zones and demilitarized, Stalin cannot allow free elections in eastern Europe.
