What is an internal organisation structure?
How a business is organised in terms of communication and decision-making.it identifies specific job roles and indicates who reports into and who is responsible for staff members.
Why do businesses have internal organisational structures
To ensure it runs as efficiently as possible.
What is span of control
How many employees a manager is responsible for.
What is chain of command
Shows the line of authority within where communication passes
What is delegation
A workload to a less senior employee however the responsibility still remains with the person who gave the workload.
What is a tall organisational structure
Has many layers,long chains of command but narrow spans of control most suited for big companies.
What is a flat organisational structure
Has few layers,short chains of command with wide spans of control most suited for local and small businesses.
What is delayering
When a business is decreasing in size its difficult to control so it may decide to take out a layer of management.
Advantages of delayering
-It can improve communication
-decision making should be quicker
-reduced wage cost as less staff are employed
Disadvantages of delayering
Employee motivation may fall as staff will be expected to take on more responsibility,businesses may need to train staff in their new role.
What is centralisation
Businesses that keep decision making at the top of the hierarchy.
Advantages of centralisation
-Decisions are made to benefit the whole business
-There will be consistency therefore customer experience will be uniform.
Disadvantages of centralisation
-May reduce staff motivation as they aren’t making any decisions
-There will be more layers meaning costs will increase.
What is decentralisation
Where decision making is spread out in the business.
Advantages of decentralisation
-Should improve staff communication
-Decisions are made closer to the customer meaning there are more likely to reflect their needs
Disadvantages of decentralisation
-Not looking into the long term of the business
-difficult to ensure consistency as everyone has a different opinion.
What is recruitment and selection
The process of identifying the need for a job,defining the requirements of the job,choosing the most appropriate person for the job.
What is job description
The details about the roles and responsibilities about the job.
What is person specification
Refers to the type of person the organisation is looking for.
Advantages of CV’s
-It’s less time consuming for applicants to complete their application.
-time is not wasted by the business creating their own
What is full time employment
Means an employee works the number of hours which is equivalent to a full working week usually between 35-40 hours.
What is part time employment
Relates to a number of hours that is under the full time working week
What are the job sharing advantages
-Businesses can benefit from being the skills of two people rather than one.
-Businesses are able to cover unplanned absence.
