Section 3.1-3.4 Flashcards
Standard Form:
Ax + By = C
To determine a linear equation:
1) You can’t have variables in the denominator
2) You can’t have more than 2 different variables
3) You can’t have the product of variables
4) You can’t have variables with exponents greater than 1
5) You can’t have negative exponents for variables
Method 1: (x-y table)
if y is already isolated
Method 2: (intercepts)
equation is in standard form (x and y on same side)
y = a#
HORIZONTAL line
x = a#
VERTICAL line
linear function
a function for which the graph is a line
solutions of an equation:
ordered pairs that make a true statement when plugged into the original equation
zeros of a function:
values of x for which f(x) = 0
x-intercepts, solutions, roots, or zeros
rate of change:
a ratio that describes on average how much one quantity changed with respect to a change in another quantity
if the rate of change is CONSTANT:
the function is LINEAR
slope:
represents the steepness of a line and is the same rate of change
rise/run = change in y/change in x = y1-y2/x1-x2 = y2-y1/x2-x1
0
undefined (vertical)
x
zero slope (horizontal)
to find value of R:
cross products (proportion)
