Section 3 Unit A Flashcards
What is viscosity?
Viscosity is the flow of a fluid and how quickly the fluid flows.
What causes viscosity?
The friction caused by a fluid to flow.
Examples of High Viscosity:
- Shampoo
- Ketchup
- Honey
- Syrup
Examples of Low Viscosity:
- Milk
- Water
- Juice
How to measure the viscosity of a fluid?
The Ramp Method
Formula for Flow Rate
FR = V / T
FR - Flow Rate
V - Volume
T - Time
What affects the flow of fluids?
Temperature
Low Temperature - adds energy causing particles to move faster
High Temperature - decreases energy causing particles to move slower
What is density?
The amount of matter in a given volume / in a space
What causes items to sink in water?
If the density of the object is higher than the density of water, the object sinks.
The opposite occurs when the density of the object is lower than the density of water.
What is the density of water?
1
Which would have the highest viscosity of the following: water, oil, or honey?
Honey would have the highest viscosity
What is the formula for finding the density?
Density (d) = Mass (m) / Volume (v)
What can Mass be measured in?
g - Grams
What can Volume be measured in?
ml or cm^3 / centimetre cubed
What is the formula used for finding Mass?
Mass (m) = Density (d) * Volume (v)
