What were Elizabeth Attitudes to educucation? (give 2 points)
-Elizabethan England had no national education system, very few children went to school due to the fees.
-People saw no need for formal education- only 15-20% are literate.
What were some changing influences on education? (give 4 points)
1) Early 1500s humanists started arguing that education was valuable.
2) Protestants argues that people need to study their scriptures - this boosts literacy.
3) Growth of the printing press meant books were less expensive- more opportunity to read
4) Growth of trade in the Elizabethan era required ordinary people to read, write and understand mathematics.
Name 5 aspects of Elizabethan education.
1) Parish schools (up to age 10)
Taught basic literacy to children of yeoman farmers and craftsmen- run by clergy
2) Private tutors
For members of nobility
3) Universities (for those ages 14/15+) Oxford and Cambridge.
4) Petty Schools (up to age 10) run privately from peoples home’s.
5) Grammar schools (boys 10 to 14) Charged fees although scholarships were available.
What were some changes to education in the years 1558-88? (give 2 points)
- New grammar schools meant children were now educated independently of the Church
-Literacy improved, result of printing press, parish schools and the need to read scriptures.

What was poverty like during Elizabeth’s reign? (give 4 points)
-Spending more than 805 of you income on bread
-Being unemployed or ill, so you can no longer provide for youself/family
-Being unable to afford the rising cost of food

What types of people were poor? (give 5 points)

Reasons for poverty in Elizabeth England (give 6 points)
1) Population growth- English population grew from 3 million to 4.2 million in 50 years.
2) Increased demand for land- drove up rents.
3) Sheep farming- more farmers want to grow sheep for wool not food.
4) Enclosure- land divided into fields for animal husbandry, arable farming and given to farmers who farmed for profit. Denied people the use of common land.
5) Economic recessions- trade embargos (Spain over the Netherlands) caused unemployment and poverty.
6) Bad Harvest (in 1552, 1565, 1573 and 1586) hit farmers, shortened supply and drove up food prices.
