Section 3 and 4 Vocab. Flashcards
Jupiter
Is the fifth planet from the sun. Jupiter is the largest planet. It is 90% hydrogen and 10% helium. There are traces of ammonia, methane, and water vapor. Jupiter’s core is 5-15 times the mas of Earth and would be 40,000 degrees C.
Saturn
Is the sixth planet from the sun and is the second-largest planet. Saturn is composed of hydrogen and helium. It has traces of methane, ammonia, and water vapor. It has the largest core and is rocky. Saturn also has the largest and complex rings.
Uranus
Is the seventh planet from the sun and is 4x larger than Earth. Uranus has 27 moons and 11 thin rings. Uranus has a parallel axis. It is 83% hydrogen, 15% helium, 2% methane and other trace gases. It also has a rocky core.
Neptune
Is the eighth planet from the sun and is 4x larger than Earth. It is 3% methane and has a rocky core. It has a faint ring and has 13 moons.
What are objects that are nearly round objects that orbit the sun (NOT satellites or objects that have not cleared the debris in their orbit)?
Dwarf planets
What is composted of dust, rock-particles, frozen water, methane, and ammonia?
Comet
What are rocky objects that are made of similar materials of planets?
Asteroids
What are objects in the sky that are smaller than asteroids (sand to boulder-sized)?
Meteoroids
Sedna
Is far beyond the Kuiper Belt but closer than the Oort Cloud. Sedna is a distant planetoid. It is smaller than Pluto and rotates in 40 days.
(Section 4) What is life beyond Earth called?
