Britain and France wanted to keep peace with Italy because wanted to keep peace
Mussolini changed it to ‘keep peace in Europe’ (France and Britain might have agreed to turn blind eye)

Thy held a ballot which said British people supported military forces if necessary

Why did Hitler want Anschluss?

Italy was on his side (previously wasn’t)
He saw appeasement as weakness
How did he achieve Anschluss?
Austrian chancellor appointed nazi (seyess inquart) to a position of power
Discovered hitler was going to overthrow so had a meeting to prevent further trouble.
Also announced he’d be holding a plebiscite to see if people wanted to stay independent.
The next morning German troops absorbed Austria into Germany.

Austrians didn’t resist
Italy did nothing
Britain and France took no action
A plebiscite said 99.75% Austrians supported Anschluss
