MAP PROJECTION
The method used to portray a part of the spherical Earth on a flat surface, whether a paper map or a computer screen
DISTORTION
the compelling quality on human thought and actions of the dominant beliefs and intellectual or emotional climate of a particular time
MAP SCALE
the relationship or ratio between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground
LEGEND/KEY
a list of symbols that appear on the map
DIRECTION INDICATOR
flashing light on a motor vehicle that indicates that the driver intends to turn or is turning to the left or right
COMPASS ROSE
a circle showing the principal directions printed on a map or chart.
CARDINAL DIRECTIONS
one set of directions that people around the world use
INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS
the four intermediate compass directions located halfway between each pair of cardinal directions
SYMBOL
a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object
POLITICAL MAP
shows legal, jurisdictional, political, or administrative boundaries.
PHYSICAL MAP
shows the physical features and sometimes elevation of a particular area or region
SPECIAL PURPOSE MAP
designed to be used for a particular purpose or for one specific group of users
INSET MAP
a map that shows a larger area in context to a smaller area
