Section 2.2 Q-cards Flashcards
Cations
Positively charged atoms
Na+
Anions
Negatively charged atoms
Cl-
Ionic Compounds
- composed of positive and negative ions.
- usually formed from a metal and non-metal.
Examples:
NaI
CaF2
KCl
LiBr
Chemical Formulas
Shows the kind and number of atoms in the smallest representative unit of the substance.
Ex:
KCl
CaCl2
Formula unit
A formula unit is the lowest whole number ratio of ions in an ionic compound.
We don’t write Na2Cl2,but we write NaCl, because the magnitude of each ion is 1.
Binary Ionic Compounds
➢Binary means 2 elements
➢Ionic means a metal and a non-metal (or cation and anion)
➢In formula writing:
-the net charge of the compound must equal to zero.
Polyatomic Ions
➢Are tightly bound groups of atoms that behave as a unit and carry a charge.

Acids
Acids are compounds that ionize, or come apart, in water and release a hydrogen ion, H+.
The positive ion in acids is the hydrogen ion
when HCl dissolves in water, it separates into a hydrogen ion, H+, and a chloride ion, Cl-.
Bases
Bases are compounds that produce a hydroxide ion, OH-, when they dissolve in water.
negative ion in bases is usually the hydroxide ion.
When NaOH(s) dissolves in water, it separates into a sodium ion, Na+, and a hydroxide ion, OH-
Naming and Writing Formulas for Bases
Ionic compound
Hydroxide is the name of the polyatomic ion, OH-.
Any Ionic compound with OH- is a base.
Naming and Writing Formulas for Acids
Molecular compounds (Use the rules for an ionic compound)
Hydrogen is the indication for acids
Any acid has a Hydrogen Atom as a metal.
Binary molecular compounds
➢Binary means 2 elements
➢Molecular means 2 non-metals.
➢There are no ionic charges in molecular compounds.
➢Prefixes are used to show how many atoms are present in each molecule.
Naming binary molecular compounds
➢Prefix + element root + ide
Example: PCl3
Phosphorous Trichloride
➢All binary compounds ending is-’ide’
Structural formula
a diagram that has the chemical symbols connected by line to show the connections among atoms in a chemical compound. One straight line represents one bond.
