Formula unit

A

A formula unit is the lowest whole number ratio of ions in an ionic compound.
We don’t write Na2Cl2,but we write NaCl, because the magnitude of each ion is 1.

Q

Acids

A

Acids are compounds that ionize, or come apart, in water and release a hydrogen ion, H+.
The positive ion in acids is the hydrogen ion
when HCl dissolves in water, it separates into a hydrogen ion, H+, and a chloride ion, Cl-.

Q

Bases

A

Bases are compounds that produce a hydroxide ion, OH-, when they dissolve in water.
negative ion in bases is usually the hydroxide ion.
When NaOH(s) dissolves in water, it separates into a sodium ion, Na+, and a hydroxide ion, OH-

Q

What are bases in there pure state.

A

Solid

17
Q

Alkali?

A

A base that is soluble in water

18
Q

How was the term alkali discovered?

A

Soqp making in the middle east thosands of years ago. warm water was poured on the ashes from the burnt wood or dried plants, dissolving the bases that were in the ashes. The resulting solution was then boiled with animal fats to make soap
