What do you need to know to be able to understand the vessel’s ballast system?

Answer 1

• The actual shape of each tank.
• The Ballast Water Management System operation and the sterilising system that has been installed.
• The current water delivery rate of ballast pumps which varies over time, by tank and by vessel condition (draught, list, trim).
• Tank capacities. (Refer to the vessel sounding tables.)
• Positions of sounding and air pipes.
• Tank stripping arrangements.
• Likely un-pumpable residual for a given trim.
