Section 2 - Waves Flashcards
Wave
Transfers energy away from its source
Progressive wave
Carries energy from one place to another without transferring any material
Amplitude
The maximum magnitude of the displacement
Displacement
How far a point on the wave has moved from its undisturbed point
Wavelength
The length of one whole wave cycle
Period
The item taken for a whole wave cycle
Frequency
The number of cycles passing a given point
Phase
A measurement of the position of a certain point along the wave cycle
Phase difference
The amount one wave lags behind the other
Transverse waves
Vibration is at right angles to the direction of travel
Longitudinal waves
Vibrations occur along the direction of travel
Intensity
How much energy a wave is carrying
Polarised wave
Only oscillates in one direction
Diffraction
When waves spread out as they come through a narrow gap
Reflection
When waves bounce back when it hits a boundary
