section 2: transport in animals - topic 2: blood vessels Flashcards
how many types of blood vessels are there?
5
what are the 5 types of blood vessels?
arteries
arterioles
capillaries
venules
veins
what is the function of arteries?
they carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body
how does the structure of arteries help maintain high pressure?
- they have thick and muscular walls, as well as elastic tissue which stretches and recoils as the heart beats
- the inner lining (endothelium) is folded, allowing the artery to expand
which arteries carry oxygenated blood and which carry deoxygenated blood?
all arteries carry oxygenated blood, except pulmonary arteries which take deoxygenated blood to the lungs
what are arterioles?
they are what arteries branch into (and are much smaller than arteries)
what is the structure of arterioles?
like arteries, they have a layer of smooth muscle, but they have less elastic tissue
how are arterioles able to control the amount of blood flowing to tissues?
because the smooth muscle allows them to expand or contract
