Section 2 - Attitude Flashcards
What should you consider if you drive a slow moving vehicle:
The drivers behind you
What should you do if a large vehicle is taking a while to overtake you:
Slow down and let it pass
Why should you sound your horn:
If there’s danger and you need to let others know you’re there
When should you dip your lights:
When you’re following another vehicle or when another vehicle is approaching you
How should you brake if you’re queuing in traffic at night:
With the handbrake so you don’t dazzle people behind you with the brake lights instead of keeping your foot on the brake - I.e. come to a full stop
Why should you flash your headlights:
To show other road users that you are there
What should you do if the road is blocked by animals:
Stop and switch off your engine so you don’t spook them
What is tailgating:
Driving very close behind another vehicle
Why is tailgating bad:
Because it’s distracting to the person in front, and it’s dangerous if the person stops suddenly, also you can’t see ahead as well
What gap should you leave in good conditions between you and the vehicle in front:
A 2 second gap
What gap should you leave in wet conditions between you and the vehicle in front:
A 4 second gap
Why might a large vehicle move to the centre before turning left:
Because they need more room to get round the corner. Don’t try and pass on the left
What should you do if someone is tailgating you:
Gradually slow down so that there is a greater safety margin between you and the vehicle in front of you
What to do if someone cuts in front of you:
Drop back until the safety margin is restored
What does a blue rectangular sign with a large white arrow pointing forwards and a small red arrow pointing backwards mean:
You have priority over oncoming vehicles
What does a circular white sign with a red border, a large black arrow pointing backwards and a small red arrow pointing forwards mean:
The opposite direction to you has priority
What should you always give priority to:
Emergency vehicles and buses coming out of bus stops
What colour flashing lights can mean an emergency vehicle:
Blue or green (for a doctors vehicle)
Who has priority at unmarked crossroads:
No one. Slow down and look both ways
Where should you be careful of:
Pedestrian crossings
What is a zebra crossing:
Where people can cross and there are no traffic lights, normally with white stripes
What should you do at a zebra crossing:
Be ready to slow down and stop, watch out for pedestrians, don’t encourage them to cross as another vehicle may be coming
What is a pelican crossing:
A zebra crossing at traffic lights
What should you do at a pelican crossing with an amber light flashing:
Give way to pedestrians, don’t move until the crossing is clear
What is a puffin crossing:
Where the crossing is electronically controlled - a red light shows until the pedestrians are off the road
What are toucan crossings:
Puffin crossings but for cyclists as well
What must you be able to do:
Signal correctly, do what you signal you are going to do correctly, control your reactions, give other road users time and space
What must you know/understand:
What can happen if you use the headlights/horn wrong, what lane discipline is, that it’s an offence to drive without due attention or consideration
What are black and white diamond signs for:
Trams
What does it mean if the sign at a bus lane doesn’t specify times of operation:
It’s in operation 24 hours a day
What can a loose filler cap on a diesel fuel tank cause:
Diesel to spill, making the road slippery for others
