American system
a series of measures developed by Henry clay intended to make the US economically self sufficient. to build the economy, clay pushed for national bank, a single currency, and improvements on roads and canals
Cumberland road
congress agreed with clay to improve roads. this was he first road built by the federal government. went from Cumberland, Maryland to wheeling , present day West Virginia. used shovels and pick axes to dig a 12 to 18 inch roadbed. construction from 1815 to 1818
Erie Canal
when Americans tried to make water transport easier by building canals. this ran from Albany to buffalo, New York. construction from 1817 to 1825. British, German, and Irish immigrants built by hand, it allowed goods and people to move between lake Erica me nyc.

1815 to 1825. the us enjoyed era of peace, pride and progress. phrase made by Boston editor. strengthened by two Supreme Court cases. 1819mcCulloch vs Maryland court asserted the implied powers of congress allowing for a national bank. 1824 Gibbons vs Ogden when court said states should not interfere with power of congress to regulate interstate commerce
sectionalism
disagreements between different regions. threatened Union. disagreements such as Missouri compromise
Missouri compromise
settled the conflict by Henry clay when Missouri applied for statehood. Missouri entered as slave state. Maine join Union as a free state to keep equal. slavery prohibited above 36,30 line. passed in 1820. still had strong disagreement between expansion of slavery
John Quincy Adams
chosen by house to be president against Andrew Jackson. Jackson supported said Adams made a corrupt bargain with Henry clay to win and they grew after Adams chose clay to be Secretary of State and it weakened Adams support.
