Section 2 Flashcards
Tire Care and Maintenance
Customers must do their PART
Pressure- Check your tire pressure monthly to insure long wear, safe predictable handling and maximum fuel economy
Alignment- keep your vehicle suspension in good working order. Abnormal wear caused by misalignment is not warrantable.
Rotation - regularly rotate tires to extend life every 6000 miles or as indicated by manufacturers
Tread- keep your tires and wheels balanced. Visually check your tires for uneven wear and signs of damage. Avoid potholes, curbs, spinning and hard cornering.
As parts and service professionals, you deal with warranty and adjustment issues everyday. Tires will be no exception, but there’s good news. First, tire warranties are relatively easy to handle. Second, among major tire brands, less than one half of one percent are defective.
So let me as y’all what’s the most common cause of tire problems you see in your dealership.
The majority of tire programs are due to improper maintenance and care. The rubber manufacturers association has a consumer education program with good advice. If these simple steps are followed, nearly every customer will get full life performance from their tires.
Section 2
Care and Maintenance & Trouble shooting
Now that we have completed section 1 let’s cover tire inspection and troubleshooting
Tire care and maintenance Correct tire pressure is important and will help achieve: -acceptable tire life - safe predictable handling - excepted fuel economy -enhanced braking capabilities Let's test your air pressure IQ
Let’s go over a very common but very important part of tire care: air pressure
Read slide
Let’s do the shirt air pressure quiz from page 7 of your workbook
Tire care and maintenance: air pressure iq
Improper air pressure is the no. 1 cause of premature tire wear. TRUE
normal operating air pressure information is indicated on the sidewall. FALSE
a healthy tire loses about 1lb of air pressure per month. TRUE
Time to check your answers:
Read slide
1. According to the U.S. Rubber manufacturers association, improper air pressure is the number 1 case of premature wear. About 1 in 4 tires are not properly inflated.
2. Correct air pressure is not found on the sidewall of the tire, this denotes the MAXIMUM air pressure the tire can handle only for times the tire is weighted with the maximum load. Instead we should use the door jam label as a guide and teach our customers to do the same.
3. Although advances have been ,are in the rubber used for the inner liner to reduce air loss, some will occur. It’s the same principle you see when a balloon is a few days old. You can clearly see the deflation. Changes in the outside temperature also affect tire pressure. This is why it is recommended that pressure is checked monthly.
When does a tire need to be replaced.
Tread depth gauge grid
Eventually tread wears down and replacement tires are necessary. A tread depth gauge will tell you and your customer how much tread remains. New tires come with an average of 10/32” tread although some light truck & SUV tires have tread depths up to 13/32”. Generally, 3/32”
Warranty A tire may have three different warranties: Workmanship and materials warranty Mileage warranty Road hazard
Let’s begin our discussion on warranty by first defining the three different warranties that may be in place on any given tire.
Every tire on your program has a manufactures warranty, but not all tires have road hazard or tread wear warranties.
Purpose of tire manufactures warranty; Protects the manufacture Adds value to product Helps sell tires Tires are warranted by their respective tire manufacturer for defects in materials and workmanship during the usable life of the tire. Your vehicle manufacture might have specific policies and procedures concerning tire adjustments
Please remember that tires are warranted for defects in materials and work,a ship by the tire manufacturer, not dealer tire llc, or the vehicle manufacturers. We’ll go over the Toyota program warranty procedure in a few minutes. These warranties protect the manufacture from responsibility for tire failures not related to design and construction. They add value to protect in that the tire is warranted against defects. Most importantly from the manufactures view, warranties help sell tires and convey a quality image.
