What was the Women’s March on Versailles?

A

Rumors spread that the queen was hoarding grain at Versailles, which was therefore causing mass hunger.

As a result, a group of women (3rd estate) who were armed marched towards Versailles and demanded that the king and queen leave the Palace of Versailles and move to Paris to the Palace of Tuileries. (10/5/1789)

A

The king and queen were trapped in the palace of Tuileries after moving because of protestors and angry mobs gathered outside.

Many members of the 2nd estate move out of France because they are not happy with the situation

A

The king and queen dressed as servants to try and sneak out of the palace in order to escape to one of their general’s estates

They were recognized shortly after and were forced to return

A

The Jacobins were a politically radical group that thought that monarchy should be abolished and a republic should be established in France

They thought that since the king and queen had tried to leave, they had pretty much announced that they are giving up their spot in the throne

What happened at the Champ de Mars, and what is the Champ de Mars?

A

The Champ de Mars is a large public area where people gather and socialize

The Jacobins held a petition drive/march through the Champ de Mars in order to convince people that the king left the throne, and they were saying that the National Assembly wasn’t radical enough

In response, the National Assembly sent soldiers down to stop this petition drive and calm the Jacobins down

What is the Massacre of Champ de Mars?

A

The Massacre of Champ de Mars was an event during the Jacobins’ petition drive where the crowd got too riled up and the National Assembly’s soldiers were forced to fire upon the crowd, killing many protestors from the Jacobins (50 people from the Jacobins)

The Declaration of Pillnitz occurred in the middle (August) of 1791, and it was a joint declaration made by the Holy Roman Empire and Prussia, which was urging France to restore its monarchy

As a result, King Louis XVI was reduced to a constitutional monarch

As a result, Prussia threatens to invade if they don’t return

Louis XVI then encourages Prussia to invade so that he may return to his throne

As a result, he is seen as an enemy of the revolution, and is put to death for treason and other crimes against the National Assembly

Ancient Regime, was the old order of estates (First estate, second estate, third estate), also incredibly unequal and unfair to the third estate as they paid about 98% of all of France’s taxes

National Convention (Committee of Public Safety) were the Jacobins and led the Reign of Terror
