Section 2 Flashcards
Why is the atmosphere more denser closer to the surface?
The atmosphere is compressable
How is compressibility defined?
Density
Whats the unit for density?
Kg/m^3
What is air density at sea level?
1.2 Kg/m^3
What is mean free path?
Average distance a molecule travels before colliding with another molecule
What is pressure
Is the result of the atmospheres mass and consequentially the force above a given point
What happens to pressure as you decrease vertically?
Pressure goes down at a nonlinear rate ( 50% for every 5km of altitude )
What is standard pressure at sea level?
1013 millibars
What is humidity?
Describes the amount of water vapor in the air
What is relative humidity?
It is a percentage for how close you are to maximum saturation for a given temperature
What is dew-point temperature
The temperature at which air becomes so saturated with water vapor, causing it to condense into water
