Psychological Disorder
Deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional patterns of thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.
Medical Model
Viewing psychological illness as a real disease, that has causes, diagnosable symptoms, and is treatable and potentially curable.
DSM-V
Lists specific criteria for various mental illnesses; Classification of mental illnesses.
Comorbid
Diagnosis of more than one disorder at one time.
Reactive depression
Sudden onset usually caused by some event (e.g., loss of a job, death of a loved one, etc.)
Endogenous depression
Gradual onset; trigger of the disorder is less obvious (characteristic of major depressive disorder)
Self-fulfilling prophecy
If you believe it, you’ll make it true
Schizophrenia
A type of psychosis characterized by disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perception, and inappropriate emotions and behaviors.
Positive symptoms
Presence of inappropriate behaviors
Negative symptoms
Rigid/motionless bodies (e.g.”waxy flexibility”), flat affect/expression.
Personality disorders
Disruptive, inflexible, enduring patterns of behavior that particularly disrupt social functioning.
Anorexia Nervosa
Person maintains a starvation diet despite being significantly underweight.
Bulimia Nervosa
Person alternates between binge eating and purging (vomiting, laxatives); person is normal-to-over-weight range.
Binge Eating
Person binge-eats, but does NOT engage in purging behaviors.
