Section 14 - Overfills Flashcards
What is the shelf life of an IV product?
The length of time it would normally take before the contents are reduced to the nominal or labeled volume
How is the rate of loss for IV products determined?
By the permeability of the bag, fluid volume to surface ratio, and storage conditions
The overfill volume may allow for ___ of IV lines
Priming
What should be done in cases where a significant portion of the dose will remain in the IV tubing?
Instructions regarding flushing the line should be provided
What is involved in preparation of a compounded medication infusion?
Diluting the drug w/ a diluent and transferring the prescribed amount of drug into a final dosage container
What does the preparation method used affect?
Total volume and concentration of the final product
What are the possible practitioner-based methods?
1) Adding to a commercial container (simple admixture)
2) Withdrawal prior to admixture (drug volume)
3) Withdrawal prior to admixture (drug volume and overfill volume)
4) Starting w/ an empty container
What is involved in the method of adding to a commercial container?
Medication is added to a manufacturer’s base solution container w/o concern for overfill
When is the simple admixture method typically used?
- For administration of intermittently administered solutions when the entire bag is intended to be infused to a single px over a relatively short time (probably less than 1 hr)
- Also may be used to prepare medications administered via continuous infusion when the effect of the medication is being continuously montiored
What is involved in the drug volume method?
- Volume of base solution equal to the volume of the medication to be added to the container is withdrawn from the manufacturer’s container, w/o concern about overfill
- Medication is then added to remaining volume in container
When is the drug volume method typically used?
When the volume of medication to be added is large relative to the size of the base solution container
What is involved in the withdrawal prior to admixture method?
- Volume of the base solution equal to the volume of the medication to be added to the container and the estimated volume of overfill is withdrawn from the manufacturer’s container
- Medication is then added to the remaining volume in the container
When is the drug volume and overfill volume method used?
When the volume of medication to be added is large relative to the size of the base solution container
What is involved in the method of starting w/ an empty container?
- Both the measured amount of medication and base solution are added to an empty IV bag or syringe
- No overfill, so this method may be used when both the total amount of drug in the final container and the concentration of drug need to be accurately known
- Final container can be labeled w/ a specific drug [ ]
For the first 3 practitioner-based methods, what should the container be labeled w/?
Total amount of drug in the container and the total estimated volume
