Section 1.1b: Sources of Authority (2) Flashcards
What is a pujari?
Pujaris are Hindu priests and learned men, responsible for performing the daily sanctuary ceremonies in the mandir, such as puja and aarti.
What is the difference between pujaris and pandits?
A possible distinction to make between pujaris and pandits is that pujaris are priests, whereas pandits are Hindu scholars learned in Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy.
What is the role of pujaris in a mandir?
Each mandir will have a pujari, or a group of them, depending on the community’s size. They will perform daily ceremonies in the mandir but may also lead puja in the homes of members of the congregation. Their main duties are to offer puja to the gods and to take care of the mandirs and their upkeep. They are responsible for the inner sanctuary and organising religious education. They are authorities on the gods and act as go-betweens.
Which people tend to be pujaris?
Pujaris are overwhelmingly male, but some Hindu denominations allow women to have this role. Priests are usually Brahmins who have embarked on a path of religious and language education.
Which reasons support the fact that more women should be allowed to become pujaris?
Women are more efficient in religious practices and are also very sincere and committed. They are also popular amongst the younger generations due to their modern attitude.
Which reasons support the fact that more women should not be allowed to become pujaris?
It could be argued that allowing women to become pujaris is against the longstanding Hindu tradition so this concept is less accepted amongst more conservative communities. There is also a problem surrounding performing rituals for the congregation during periods of mensuration.
What is a swami?
The term ‘swami’ is a title given to Hindu monks, someone who has overcome worldly desires. Swamis belong to religious orders and are often ascetics and devote their lives to their own spirituality and developing the spirituality of others. They are learned men who have studied Hindu scriptures intensely.
Why might a Hindu consult a swami?
A Hindu wanting to learn about the scriptures, receive guidance or to develop their own spirituality may choose to visit a swami or an ashram. Swamis from India are welcomed at Hindu community centres and mandirs to deliver talks and lectures on the scriptures and other aspects of Hindu teaching and philosophy.
What is a guru?
Gurus are men who help Hindus on their path to achieving moksha. Said to have already achieved enlightenment, they remove the darkness from an individual. Gurus should we well-versed in the scriptures and know God.
Why are gurus consulted?
Gurus are consulted by Hindus for answers to questions about future actions, diet and all matters relating to their spiritual development. Gurus are said to be able to pass on their teaching through a glance (known as darshan).
