Section 1.1 Flashcards
what does probability provide?
the framework for the study and application of statistics
what is a statistic?
a single number summarising in some way the values of the variable in the sample actually collected
what is the science of statistics?
collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, estimation and interpretation of information
what is descriptive statistics?
the science of summarizing data, numerically and graphically
what is inferential statistics?
to infer or estimate the value of population parameters using sample statistics as estimates
what is an experimental unit/ individual?
a single object upon which we collect data e.g person, thing, transaction, event
what is a population?
a collection of experimental units/ individuals that we are interested in studying
what is a sample?
a subset of experimental units/ individuals from the population
what are the two types of variables?
- qualitative
- quantitative
what is a variable?
a characteristic or property of an individual experimental unit e.g height
how can qualitative data be classified?
-ordered (ordinal)
- unordered (nominal)
how is quantitative data measured?
on a numeric scale
what is a parameter?
a single number summarising in some way the values of the. variable in the population of interest
