Section 10.2- Friction, Gravity, And Elastic Forces Flashcards
What two factors affect how much friction exists in a system?
- types of surfaces involved
* how hard the surfaces push together
Friction
A force that two surfaces exert in each other when they rub against each other
4 types of friction
- static- not moving
- fluid- solid object moves through fluid
- rolling- object rolls across a surface
- sliding- 2 solid surfaces slide over each other
Gravity
Force that pulls objects toward each other
Mass
Measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight
Gravitational force exerted on a person or object at the surface of a planet
Weight= Mass • Acceleration due to gravity
Free fall
When the only force acting on an object is gravity
(An object in free fall is accelerating)
In free fall, the force of gravity alone causes an object to accelerate in the downward direction.
Air Resistance
A type of fluid friction which acts on objects falling through air
Projectile
An object that is thrown
When is matter considered elastic?
It is considered elastic if it returns to its original shape after it is squeezed or stretched
Compression
An elastic force that squeezes or pushes matter together
Tension
An elastic force that stretches or pulls matter
