Literal Language
The actual, factual meaning of a word with no exaggeration
Figurative Language
Figure of speech, words that are used to convey meaning
Connotations
Words or feelings that are associated with the given word
Tone
The overall feeling of a text, set by the writer
Narrative Perspective
The perspective that the story is written in, can be first, second or third person
Synonyms
Words that mean a similar thing to another word
Antonyms
Words that mean the opposite to another word
Metaphor
Describing something as one thing when it is actually another thing
Simile
An indirect comparison using “like” or “as”
Narrative
A written account of events, a story
Genre
Categories in music, art or literature
Protagonist
The hero or main character in a story
Propaganda
Information, with a strong bias or agenda, used to promote a particular cause or point of view
Trope
A typical device, characteristic, or recurring idea that we can expect in different genres or text type
Etiology
Stories that explain the origins of nature or the word; how things came to be
Context
A historical time, place or circumstance in which a text has been written
Act
One of the divisions of a plot used to shift between the rising action, the climax, and the falling action
Scene
Represents a moment in time, many scenes make up an act
Symbol
Giving abstract meaning to a concrete item
Antagonist
The opposing character that aims to create tension between the protagonist
The Hero’s Journey
A typical storyline, series of events, or characters that occur in a novel
Character Type
The different categories of a character, with many recurring characteristics across similar text types
Stanza
Made up of three lines or more, a paragraph within a poem
