What does using は after a word do to that word?
It makes it the topic of the sentence. The rest of the sentence is a comment about it.
カレーはおいしいです。[karee wa oishii desu] - Curry is tasty
The hiragana は is only pronounced as ‘wa’ when it was what? What is it otherwise pronounced as?
When it is the topic marker. It is otherwise pronounced as ‘ha’.
What is katakana mainly used for?
Katakana is mainly used for words borrowed from other languages.
What does each character represent in katakana?
Each character represents a syllable (a sound chunk that contains one vowel).
What does putting か [ka] at the send of a sentence do?
It turns a statement into a question. Note that a period is still used to finish the sentence.
おいしいですか。[oishii desu ka] - Is it tasty?
これはxです / これはxですか
[ko re wa x des(u) (ka)]
This is x / Is this x?

[so re wa x des(u) (ka)]
