Section 1 Understanding Solutions (science) Flashcards
Solution
a well mixed mixture that contains a solvent and at least one solute
Solvent
is the part of a solution present in the largest amount
Solute
is the substance that is present in a solution in the smaller amount and is dissolved by the solvent
Example of a solvent and solute
Solution – Alcohol in water, or sugar and water
Solvent – Water, tea
Solute – Salt and water
What state of matter are solvents?
They can be any state of matter
What is the universal solvent?
Water that dissolves so many substances
Suspension
a mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration
Colloid
A mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out
Example of a Suspension and Colloid
Suspension – Chalk in water, sand in water
Colloid – Fog, milk, mayonnaise
What is the Tyndall Affect
the particles of a colloid that scatter the light
What two effects do solutes have on solvents?
Higher boiling points and lowers freezing point
