Section 1 Flashcards
What is a quick way to find information regarding troubleshooting problems in Pro Tools?
Search the PDFs provided in-house.
What is the playback engine?
The device you choose through which the music is played back to you, whether digital or hardware.
What is the difference in available playback engines between Mac and Windows in the pro tools software.
Mac comes with Pro Tools Aggregate I/O playback engine when you download Pro Tools! With windows it is necessary to download the driver separately.
What is the Hardware Buffering Size?
The number of samples the CPU passes to and from the I/O in one go.
What are the consequences of choosing a larger or smaller buffer size?
Larger buffer sizes increase latency and cause the program to be less responsive as the buffer has to be filled before it can be transmitted, but it also frees up processing power for other tasks. Smaller buffer sizes are more demanding on a computer, and reduce the amount of processing power the computer can simultaneously on plugins, and obviously have lower latency.
What is not effective in terms of host processor settings?
Jacking them all the way up for Pro Tools, because other applications will run slowly within Pro Tools (ask Joe)?
What is the CPU Usage Limit?
The CPU Usage limit allocates resources from your CPU to host based tasks in Pro Tools. Do not set this too high, or it takes away from other computer functions and will actually result in slower response times
What is the Delay Compensation Engine? What is it measured in? What are the four settings?
The delay compensation Engine compensates for Delay introduced into your Pro Tools System? None, Short (1023 at 48kHz), Long (4095 at 48kHZ), Maximum (16,383 samples at 48k Hz)
What ultimately causes latency?
Converting Analog Signals into Digital Signals that can be handled by a computer and back again. That’s a process.
What is the plug-in streaming buffer size?
The plugin streaming buffer size determines how much memory is allocated by the digidesign audio engine for streaming files with samples being used in “Structure”, the sampling software that has been scaled down to a “free” version that comes with Pro Tools. There is no need to change this setting unless an error has occurred.
What are the seven settings in pro tools that you should review in the reference guide to optimize for your personal use?
Display, Operation, Editing, Mixing, Processing, MIDI, Synchronization
What are the two main windows you can view in pro tools?
The Edit and Mix Windows.
What are the four mode buttons in the Edit tool bar? What do each one of them do?
Shuffle - this mode allows to edit, paste, and move clips however and is dependent on other clips in your session. Meaning that clips will condense the space forward (in time meaning closer the the beginning of your session)
Slip - Place anywhere on the channel strip timeline
Spot - When moving a clip in spot mode, a dialogue box appears asking for the specific place on the timeline you want your clip placed
Grid - (absolute) allows to move clips to set values on the timeline (relative) allows to move clips relative to their starting position in predetermined chunks
How to the zoom buttons work in the toolbar?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5iZf0ekOIA There you go you fuck.
What are the modes on the zoomer? What happens if you hold option/alt key while clicking?
Normal Mode and Single Mode (mess around). You zoom out!
