Genre
a division of type of literature characterized by a particular style
Short story
a genre in literature which is defined as a brief fictional narrative in prose
Setting
the time and place of the action in a literary work
3rd person omniscient point of view/ narrative viewpoint
an all-knowing narrator who stands outside the story and comments on the action who knows the thoughts and feelings on the characters
Plot structure
the sequence of events in a story

Exposition
introduces the characters, setting, and conflict
Rising action
occurs as complications, twists, or intensifications of the conflict in the story
Climax
the moment of most intense uncertainty; the high point of interest or suspense in a story

Resolution
the end of the central conflict in a story which may or may not happen
Conflict
a struggle between opposing

Irony
the general name given in literary techniques that involve differences between appearance and reality, expectation and result, or mean and intention
Foil
a character who is contrasted with another character
