Section 1 Flashcards
Neutron - mass and charge
1 and 0
Electron - mass and charge
1/2000 and 1-
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic number
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes
Elements are atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Proton - mass and charge
1 and 1+
Why do isotopes have similar chemical properties?
Have the same configuration of electrons
Why do isotopes have slightly different physical properties?
Because the physical properties depend more on the mass of the atom
What is the nuclear symbol?
The mass number, atomic number and element symbol
Relative atomic mass
the mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
relative isotopic mass
the mass of an atom of an isotope of an element compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
relative molecular mass
the average mass of a molecule compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
number of moles equation
number of particles you have / number of particles in a mole
gas equation under standard conditions
no. moles = volume in dm / 24
gas equation not under standard conditions
pV = nRT
