What is the excluded subject matter test?

Aerotel / Macrossan [2006] EWCA Civ 1371

i) properly construe the claim;
ii) identify the actual contribution;
iii) ask if this falls solely within an exclusion;
iv) check if the actual contribution is technical.

Jacob LJ suggests that step 2 (which is basically where ‘as such’ gets decided) equates to ‘What the inventor really added to human knowledge’.
