What classifies as Class A (Combination Vechicle)

A
  • Any combination of vehicles with gross combination weight rating (GCWR) 26,001 or more lbs, provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is MORE THAN 10,000 lbs
  • Most include: truck-tractor/semi-trailer or truck and trailer combinations
  • Since more skills are required to drive class A, with this license you can also drive class B and C

What classifies as class B (Heavy Straight Vehicles)

A
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR 26,001 or more lbs, or any such vehicle towing another vehicle NOT in excess of 10,000 lbs GVWR
  • Such as: straight trucks and large buses (including articulated buses)
  • With this license, can drive class C as well

What Classifies as Class C (Small Vehicles)

A
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR LESS THAN 26,001 lbs, or any such vehicle towing another vehicle NOT in excess of 10,000 lbs GVWR
  • Vehicles of this size only included in CDL if carries 16 or more passengers (including driver) or used to transport hazardous materials (in quantities requiring placarding under regulations) or material listed as select agent or toxin

A
  • Many drivers with class A license may wish to pull double or triple trailers and therefore would need to add this endorsement
  • Special knowledge examination must be passed

Tank vehicle (N) endorsement

A
  • Needed for drivers of vehicles designated for transporting liquid or gaseous materials
  • With a rated capacity of more than 119 gallons (individual or combined) and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more (permanently or temp. attached)
  • Applies to class A, B, and C (only to C if hauling hazardous materials)
  • Cargo is heavy, prone to shifting, and higher center of gravity
  • Special knowledge examination must be passed

A
  • For driving vehicles with 16 or more people (including driver)
  • For buses in any class
  • Special knowledge examination must be passed

Hazardous material (H) endorsement

A
  • Regardless of vehicle class who wish to haul any material designated as hazardous that has been placarded
  • Or any quantity of material listed as a select agent or toxin
  • Special knowledge examination must be passed
  • Requires background check by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and US Department of Transportation

- AKA you need the full license not just the permit

A

If state has been notified that driver has been issued medical variance, must be indicated of such medical variance on driver record and CDL

A

CLP holder with N endorsement can only operate an empty tank vehicle and prohibited from operating any tank vehicle that previously contained hazardous materials that hasn’t been purged of materials

If applicant performs skill test in vehicle equipped with air over hydraulic brakes, restricted from operating vehicle fully on air brake principle

Railroad-Highway crossing violations
Failing to: - stop before reaching the crossing if tracks are not clear - slow down and check tracks are clear of approaching trains - failing to stop before driving onto crossing (for those required to always stop) - have enough space to drive completely through crossing without stopping - obey traffic control device or enforcement official at crossing - negotiate a crossing because of insufficient undercarriage clearance

Will help you find problems that could cause a crash of breakdown

During a trip inspection
- Watch guages - Use senses to check problems - Check critical items when you stop: =tires, wheels, rims = brakes = lights and reflectors = brake and electric. connections to trailer = coupling device = cargo securement device

Tire problems
- too much/little air pressure - bad wear (at least 4/32 in tread depth on front tires, 2/32 in tread on rest) - cuts or damages - tread separation - dual tires touching - mismatched sizes - radial and bias-ply tires used together - cut/crack valve stem - re-grooved, recapped, or retreaded tires on front wheels of bus prohibited
