Section 1 Flashcards
All vertebrates have?
Backbones
What is a notochard?
A flexible rod that supports a chordate’s back. Some chordates like a Lancelot have notochords all their lives, in contrast, in vertebrates part or all of the notochord is replaced by a backbone
What are some characteristics that all chordates have?
1.) a notochord
2.) a nerve cord that runs down their back which is connected to the nerves and brain
3) slits in their throat area
What are characteristics that vertebrates have?
1) a backbone ( also called a spine) that runs down the center of its back
2) an internal skeleton
What characteristic do only vertebrates have?
A backbone
What are vertebrae?
Many singular bones that are lined up in a row like beads on a string. Joints are moveable connections between the vertebrate and give the spine flexibility
What is the function of an endoskelaton in vertebrates?
It protects the internal organs of the body , helps give the body shape and gives muscles a place to attach
What is an ectotherm?
An animal whose body does not produce much internal heat . Its body temperature changes depending on the temperature of its environment
What are some examples of ectotherms?
Fish, amphibians and reptiles
What is an endotherm?
An animal whose body regulates its own temperature by controlling the internal heat it produces. Its body temperature usually doesn’t change much even when the temperature of its environment changes
What are some examples of endotherms?
Birds and mammals
What gives a backbone flexibility?
Joints
Can ectotherms or endotherms produce internal heat?
Endotherms
