- Save the Jews from evil
- Come at the end of time
- Establish a new kingdom (get rid of Romans)
- Messianic Age
Mark said the Messiah would…
- Save the disciples from evil and death
- Perform miracles
- Establish God’s kingdom
- Show OT prophecies
- Resurrect = overcoming evil = eternal life
Outline 3 beliefs about the title Messiah
- It shows Jesus’ power is recognised by God
- He is the one that will liberate the Jews from the Romans
- The title shows royalty
State 3 facts about the title ‘Messiah’
- Means the ‘anointed one’ in Hebrew
- Descendant of the Jewish King David
- Means to be recognised by God
- Will establish God’s kingdom on earth
What was the Messianic Age?
A time when the Messiah would come and establish God’s kingdom on earth -> Mark wanted to show Jesus as the Messiah promised in the OT
Give 2 reasons why Jesus being called ‘Messiah’ is significant (5)
- Because it shows that Jesus’ power is recognised by God (Peter said ‘you are the Messiah’)
- Also important because it fulfils OT prophecies and that the promises to the people have been carried through which tell them they’ll be saved from evil
State 3 facts about the title ‘Son of Man’
- Used in the Bible by Jesus himself
- Used 14 times
- Often associated with suffering in the Bible
Outline 3 beliefs about the title ‘Son of Man’
- Shows Jesus was given God’s authority
- Jesus used it to avoid blasphemy
- Shows Jesus’ humanity and compassion
For and against ‘Messiah’ as the correct title for Jesus
For:
- shows his power was recognised by God
- the one who liberates the Jews from the Romans
- provides Jews with reassurance -> he will save them from persecution
- confirmed OT prophecies (transfiguration + ‘suffering servant’ - Isaiah)
- offers a way of getting forgiveness
Against:
- blasphemy
- shows his royalty -> Jesus isn’t higher than everyone else
- upset Romans
For ‘Son of Man’ as the correct title for Jesus
For:
- the one Jesus uses himself (BUT only because of blasphemy)
- connects Jesus with normal people
- the name used in the OT
- avoids blasphemy
- shows he was given authority by God (BUT why would he need authority if he is in the trinity himself)
- shows how God understands pain and suffering + emphasises the pain Jesus went through for humanity
- supports the concept of the Trinity
Explain 2 Christian beliefs about the title ‘Son of Man’
- it shows how Jesus is connected to normal people -> more relatable and allows to Christians to have a closer relationship with God
- supports the concept of the trinity -> God as the son and father
Why might Mark begin his Gospel with the account of Jesus’ baptism?
- Jesus’ identity
- beginning of Jesus
- shows Jesus as the Son of Man and willing to submit himself before God
- shows God expressing his love + gives Jesus power
- Jesus fulfilled OT (Isaiah)
- sets examples to his followers -> must undergo the sacraments to be closer to God and be a good Christian
Explain why Jesus’ baptism is important for Christians today (5)
- Because it shows the start of Jesus’ ministry and his identity -> shows that the sacraments are the Christian way of life and when they have their own baptism they can commemorate the beginning of Jesus
- the trinity were present -> ‘the voice said this is my son’
Why does the baptism of Jesus cause problems for Christians today?
- baptisms are the cleanse sin, does this mean Jesus had sin?
- Jesus shouldn’t have to promise himself to Christianity if he is God (BUT he should set an example)
- where did John get his authority to perform the sacrament from
What is a miracle?
An event that happens that cannot be explained by science and deemed as impossible
Name 3 nature miracles
- calming of the storm
- the feeding of the 5000
- Jesus walks on water
Main takeaways from the Calming of the Storm
- evidence Jesus is the Son of God with divine power over nature
- has control over the elements
- Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith in him
- disciples were amazed as they were just normal people who had not witnessed anything like it before
Symbolism in the calming of the storm
- the boat = Christian Church
- the storm = trouble/persecution
- how Jesus guides people through the storms of life
Problems of the calming of the storm
- we know what causes storms -> not to do with evil/devil
- Jesus shows impatience
Explain 2 reasons why the Calming of the storm is important for Christians today (5)
- because it reassures them that no matter what they’re going through Jesus will always be there to guide them
- ?
Main takeaways from the Feeding of the 5000
- fed 5000 with just 5 loaves and 2 fish
- shows Jesus’ compassion ‘his heart was filled with pity for them’
- shows community ‘gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people’
What the feeding of the 5000 teaches Christians today
- to always help others
- treat people equally
- those who show faith will be rewarded
- those who turn to God for help will receive it
Main takeaways from Jesus walks on water
- Jesus walking on the fierce waves symbolises good overcoming evil
- OT prophecy -> only someone with divine power can conquer the waves
Explain why the story of Jesus walking on water is important for Christians (5)
- because it proves the OT prophecies true (‘only someone with divine power can conquer the waves’)
- also because it shows them Jesus will always be there but they must have faith
Symbolism in the Healing of Legion
- tombs = mental darkness/evil spirits
- iron chains = the power of evil
- once healed he lost the chains = into the light
What does Mark tell us about Jesus in the Healing of the Legion?
- Merciful -> helped a gentile
- wants to relate to others
- compassionate
- inclusive -> asked the man’s name to make him feel more human
Do you think the story of Legion has anything to teach Christians today? (5)
- Yes because the symbolism of the tombs and iron chains teaches us the power of evil and how Jesus will always protect us
- No because we know people can’t be possessed (science) and it was most likely mental illness
