Lungs definition
The main organs of the respiratory system
Cilia definition
Tiny hairlike extensions that move together in a sweeping motion
Alveoli definition
Tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gasses between the air and blood
Pharynx definition
The throat; part of both the respiration and the digestive systems
Diaphragm definition
A large dome shaped muscle that plays an important role in breathing
Trachea definition
The windpipe is a passage in which air moves in the respiratory system
Larynx definition
The voice box; located at the top of the trachea, underneath the epiglottis
Bronchi definition
The passage that directs air to the lungs
Vocal cords definition
Folds of connective tissue that stretch across the opening of the larynx and produce a persons voice
Respiration definition
The process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions inside cells; also called cellular respiration
