Section 1 Flashcards
What is a general rule for laptop parts?
They have different form factors and are not interchangeable
What kind of battery does a laptop use?
Lithium Ion or Li-Ion battery
What makes the battery capacity go down?
Charging it
How would you replace a laptop battery?
Remove it with the switch on the back, slide it out and slide the new one
Are keyboards getting smaller or larger?
Smaller and losing keys b/c of this
How would you replace a laptop keyboard?
Remove a few screws and unplug a ribbon cable, may need to remove keycaps for some repairs
What type of RAM should be used to upgrade it?
SO-DIMM
How would you upgrade RAM?
May be a spot to add more or soldered to the motherboard (in which case you would have to replace the whole motherboard)
What form factor do laptops use for HDDs and SSDs?
2.5in
What does upgrading from a HDD to an SSD do?
Improves reading and writing speed
What are the advantages of an M.2?
No power cables, easy to install, smaller form factor, much more storage
How would you install storage?
Open the laptop, unscrew the screws, disconnect from SATA port, and slide it out
What are three ways to transfer HDD to SSD?
1). Install an OS on the SDD and move everything over
2). Clone the HDD (create an image) and move it to the SSD
3). Transfer image directly from one drive to another with both systems running at the same time
What do you need to do to access 802.11
Plug in either a Mini PCI card (LAN) or Bluetooth card (PAN)
How would you replace a 802.11 card?
Designed to be replaceable, so slide it into the spot, connect wires, and push it down
Where are biometrics settings configured?
The OS and actual hardware
What is the purpose of NFC?
Data transfer or perform authentication without physically touching the device
What is an LCD display?
A series of liquid crystals associated with color filters with a backlight that shines through to display an image
Types of LCDs
TN (twisted nematic), IPS (in plane switching), VA (vertical alignment)
Advantages/Disadvantages of LCD
A: Lightweight, low power, inexpensive
D: Achieving a true black is difficult, requires backlight to be completely replaced if it fails and finding a replacement is hard
Advantages/Disadvantages of TN LCD
A: Fast response times that are good for gaming
D: Need to be looking directly at display for best picture and not at an angle
Advantages/Disadvantages of IPS LCD
A: Good color representation
D: Expensive
Advantages/Disadvantages of VA LCD
A: Good middle between TN and IPS, good color representation
D: Slower response time than TN
What is an OLED display?
Organic material that emits light when its provided with an electrical current
Advantages of an OLED
Thin and flexible display, no backlight, great color representation
What must you look out for when replacing display?
Antenna wrapped around display
What do you need to do after replacing display?
Put the antenna back following the same path it took before
