Secret Service Acts I and II Summary

A
  • Mrs. Varney tells Wilfred that she will ask his father about his joining the military
  • Wilfred wants to join the military for Caroline
  • Edith enters and announces the news about her letter from the president excusing Capt. Thorne from his duty (placing him in charge of the telegraph service)
  • Capt. Thorne enters to say goodbye to Edith
  • Edith beats around the bush & exits to get letter
  • Capt. Thorne waits –> Caroline enters and convinces Thorne to stay for the party to escort Edith
  • Wilfred enters with military clothes under his coat
  • Wilfred & Caroline –> ex-fiances –> Caroline wants a military man to take care of
  • Caroline takes clothes to fix for Wilfred
  • Wilfred goes to write letter to his dad (General Varney)
  • Arrelsford enters looking for Jonas, suspecting that Jonas has had contact with a spy from the Union Army
  • Arrelsford confronts Jonas and has him beaten
  • Arrelsford tells Mrs. Varney of his suspicions about Louis Dumont (Capt. Thorne)
  • Edith refuses to believe that Thorne is a traitor/spy
  • Edith suggests that Arrelsford consults Thorne’s brother (who is in prison)

  • Thorne (Lewis Dumont) fights his brother but then stops and Henry recites the letter
  • Henry tells Thorne (Lewis) to shoot him in the leg –> so that they don’t think Thorne is a spy
  • Thorne refuses –> Henry shoots himself in leg
  • Everyone rushes in –> Thorne claims to have shot Henry

Secret Service Acts III and IV

  • Caroline wants to write Wilfred –> goes to Telegraph Service –> Arrelsford and Eddinger refuse to send it
  • They take her letter –> Arrelsford refuses to send it
  • Caroline goes to talk to General Randolph to have her letter sent
  • Thorne enters Telegraph Office –> wants to send message to the Union –> telegraph worker tells him about gun under desk
  • Arrelsford and Edith are hiding in the same room as Thorne
  • Thorne turns off light –> Arrelsford shoots Thorne in hand –> asks Edith to be a witness
  • Soldiers outside banging on door –> Thorne frames Arrelsford –> Edith shows them the letter from the president and he is arrested
  • Edith fights to prove Thorne’s innocence
  • Thorne admits that he’s a spy
  • Arrelsford thinks that Thorne has sent the message (he hasn’t)
  • Wilfred returns, injured but not fatally
  • Thorne breaks into Varney’s house to see his brother
  • He discovers that Henry is dead –> Wilfred and Arrelsford arrest him –> Wilfred suggests a fair trial
  • They are going to execute him but Jonas switches out the ammunition
  • Jonas tells Edith to tell Thorne about the tampered guns
  • Edith relays the message, but Thorne tells the sergeant about the guns
  • General Randolph confirms that Thorne never sent the message
  • Thorne sent to prison until war is over
  • Arrelsford is taken off the case
  • Randolph offers Thorne to join the Confederates but he refuses
  • Thorne and Edith promise to meet again in the future
