secrecy Flashcards
stevensons repeated use of elision
-enfield returns from somewhere at 3am
-utterson has done “many ill things” even though his past is “fairly blameless”
many things are left unsaid/ downplayed
jekyll cannot speak of hyde- asks utterson to “respect” his silence and says he “cannot share”
-enfield describes trampled girl as a “bad story”
symbolism of locked doors
- back door to jekylls house has “neither bell nor knocker”
-jekyll slams door shut on utterson and enfield + later locks himself in a cupboard
use of letters
both lanyon and jekyll choose to write down their experiences rather than speak about them
-letters are left unread until the end- build suspense + secrecy
Hydes secretive nature
Hyde’s secretive nature—his tendency to act under cover of darkness, his secret existence as Jekyll’s darker self—illustrates his connection to secrecy. His evil deeds remain unknown to most, hiding in the shadows.
stevenson may be commenting on the disastrous consequences of secrecy
