After the Jerusalem council,
Paul wanted to return to his churches to see how they were doing. He and Barnabas
separated and he took Silas along as his travelling companion. They returned to the
churches he had planted on his first journey, where they enlisted Timothy as a coworker. Then the Holy Spirit directed them to preach the gospel in Macedonia, a large
Roman province that spanned the area now divided into Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and
Greece. Over a period of about two years they preached and planted churches in
Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens (no church plant mentioned in Acts), and finally
Corinth, where they spent 18 months. They stopped briefly at Ephesus on the way
home, but did not stay long
