Secondary Growth and Transport is vascular plants Flashcards
What is the problem with growing tall(Plants)
-More light for photosynthesis
-Weight of the shoot increases
-More support needed
-Tall plants can get out of the shade of their neighbours
Lateral Meristems
Adds thickness to woody plants, a process called secondary growth
Vascular Cambium Defination
adds layers of vascular tissue called secondary xylem and secondary phloem
Cork cambium Defination
Replaces the epidermis with periderm, which is thicker and tougher
Where does secondary growth occur?
Stems and roots of woody plants
Thinner tube = Greater height
This refers to capillary action, tensile strengh of water column and water potential
Apoplastic Route
Through the cell wall
Symplastic route
Through the cytosol
Transmembrane route
Across the cell wall and plasma membrane
