Secondary Economic Activity Flashcards
Factors that influence the location of a factory x7
Raw Materials Markets Transport Labour force Capital Government/EU policy Personal preferences
Heavy industry
The resource materials and products being made are big and heavy. Eg. Aughinish Alumina
Light industry
Products being made are small and light. Eg. Intel Ireland
Multinational Corporations (MNCs)
These companies make their products in many different countries. Eg. Nike
Footloose Industries
Aren’t tied to one location. Most settle in industrial estates
Industrial inertia
When a company doesn’t relocate even though it may be economically sound to do so
Different industrial regions
- Industrialized regions
- Newly-industrialized regions
- Industrially emergent regions
Industrialized regions
All countries that industrialized since the industrial revolution
Newly- industrialized regions
Cheap labour is here. MNCs are attracted to these areas eg. Thailand
Industrially-emergent regions
Very little manufacturing takes place here (Africa). Africa is becoming more attracted by MNCs looking for labour as the newly industrialized regions are developing more and expect higher wages
Acid rain
Acid rain is created when fossil fuels are burned and combine with the water vapor in the atmosphere and falls as acid rain.
Problems caused by acid rain
Pollute rivers= kills fish
Cause disease in forests = Black Forest in Germany
Acid rain damages old buildings and stone eg. limestone
Solutions to acid rain
Use renewable energy sources
Use natural gas
Use filters on coal and oil power stations to reduce sulphuric dioxide emissions
Use public transport
Incineration
Factories that burn waste
