Unionist
People who wanted to stay in the Union (U.S.) and work out the differences instead of seceding.
Confederate States of America
The name seceding states gave themselves as a newly formed government.
Abolitionist
A person who wanted to END slavery.
Tariff
A tax that is placed on imports or exports from a country that makes it more expensive.
Blockade
Sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving.
Cotton Diplomacy
The South’s attempt to gain Great Britain’s favor.
(The South’s resources in exchange for acknowledgement as separate from the Union)
Martial Law
Military forces rule (have the power)
Juneteenth (June 19th, 1865)
The date in which the proclamation that slaves were free was made.
