sec 2-5-2 Flashcards
Average speed along a track with respect to the earth
Speed of Advance (SOA)
A reading obtained from airspeed indicator, uncorrected for wind and air density
Indicated Air Speed (IAS)
Calibrated airspeed corrected for air density and wind
True Air Speed (TAS)
Actual speed of an aircraft over the earth’s surface
Actual Ground Speed
Direction in which an aircraft points or heads at any instant
Heading
Horizontal angle measured clockwise from heading
(nose) of aircraft
Relative bearing
Horizontal angle measured clockwise from magnetic north
Magnetic bearing
Horizontal angle measured clockwise from true north
True bearing
Any angular difference between magnetic north and true north
Variation
Desired path of travel, on or above the surface of the earth
Course
Extent or amount of space between two points
Distance
Distance from aircraft to target or point
Range
Displacement of an aircraft from the desired course due to crosswind
Drift
Actual path of travel, on or above the surface of the earth
Track
A circle formed on the surface of the earth intersection of a plane that does not pass through the center of the earth. (does not divide the earth into two equal parts
Small circle
A small circle whose plane is parallel to the equator
Parallel
Angular distance measured north or south from the equator
Latitude
A circle formed on the surface of the earth by the intersection of a plane passing through the center of the earth. (dividing the earth in half)
Great circle
Great circle that goes through the north and south poles
Meridian
Angular distance measured east or west of the Prime Meridian
Longitude
an identifiable point on the earth’s surface
Position
Location of an object at a specific time, established by navigational aids like GPS
Fix
Projection of a future position, from a previously known position using an estimated course and speed
Dead reckoning
a system based on the use of latitudinal and longitudinal points to locate a position on the earth
Geographic coordinates
how long is 1 nautical mile in ft
6076ft.
how long is 1 Statute mile in ft
5280ft.
