Seasons, Solstices, and Equinoxes Flashcards
The four seasons are
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring
Differentiate equinox from solstice
An equinox is when day and nighttime are roughly the same; a solstice is when there is a longer (Summer) or short (Winter) day
Summer occurs because
The Earth’s North Pole is tilted towards the Sun, making days longer.
The Summer Solstice occurs on
June 21st. This is marks the onset of summer and is the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day and longest night.
During Summer, the North Pole experiences
An endless day
Summer comprises which months?
June, July, August
Autumn occurs because
The Earth is tilted parallel with its orbit and perpendicular to the Sunlight hitting it. Here day and night is 12 hours and Earth begins “cooling off” from Summer
The Autumnal Equinox occurs on
September 21
Autumn comprises which months?
September, October, November
Winter occurs because
The Earth’s axis is tilted away from the Sun, making nights longer and days shorter.
Winter Solstice occurs on
December 21st. This marks the first day of Winter in the States.
During winter, the North Pole experiences
An endless night
Winter comprises which months?
December, January, February
Spring occurs because
The Earth’s axis is tilted parallel to its orbit and perpendicular to the Sunlight hitting it. Here day and night is 12 hours and Earth begins “warming up” from winter
Spring comprises which Months?
March, April, May
