Seasoning Flashcards
Green timber is
Timber that is first felled
Moisture content in a newly felled tree
50%
Suitable moisture content
20% or less
Reasons for seasoning
Hygroscopic ?
A substance affected by moisture changes
Equilibrium?
Wood will absorb and release moisture to reach a Balance with the surrounding air
EMC ( equilibrium moisture content )
Balance with the surrounding moistire content by absorbing or releasing moisture
Two types lf seasoning ?
Natural/ air seasoning
Kiln seasoning
Seasoning
The drying of timber
Air seasoning advantage
❗️no expensive equipment needed
❗️little labour cost
❗️not energy dependant
Air seasoning diasadvantage
✖️slow drying process ✖️ large area required ✖️depends on the weather ✖️cannot be controlled ✖️dries to 20-22%
Air seasoning?
Planks or boards of wood stacked on top of eachother.
Stickers divide each plank to allow even air flow
Block piers lift the timber off the ground
It has a shelter with a slopped roof to allow the rain to run off it and keep the wood dry.
Kiln seasoning advantage
Kiln seasoning disadvantage
❗️ its expensive
❗️ requires a skilled operator
❗️ heating the kiln needs a lot of energy
Kiln seasoning
Kiln is a large oven
Timber is stacked on trolleys and wheeled in
Steam is pumped in to heat the wood and maintain moisture levels
Fans keep the air circulating
Hot air id allowed to escape through vents
