Seamanship Class 4 Flashcards

1
Q

What types of marine sextant are there?

A

There are two types in common use, micrometer and vernier sextants. The difference between the two mainly lies in the method of graduating and reading the arc.

Q

When correcting a sextant for errors, is there an order in which they must be corrected?

A

Yes, errors should be corrected in the following order:
1st - Perpendicularity error
2nd - Side error
3rd - Index error.

Q

What is perpendicularity error?

A

Perpendicularity error is present if the index mirror is not perpendicular to the plane of the sextant.

Q

What is side error?

A

Side error is present if the horizon mirror is not perpendicular to the plane of the sextant.

Q

What is index error?

A

The index arm of the sextant must be parallel to the horizon mirror when the index arm is set at zero. If not, then index error is present.

Q

What fires are foam extinguishers designed for use on, and how?

A

Foam extinguishers are primarily designed for use on oil fires. The foam should not be discharged into the burning liquid, but instead directed at a vertical structure to allow it to flow gently over the surface, thus forming a seal which prevents the vapours mixing with the atmosphere. In the case of mechanical foam extinguishers do not point the nozzle directly at the oil before activating as water is discharged initially and will create a ‘flash’.

Q

How may a fire hose become damaged?

A

A fire hose can become damaged by:
-Mildew or by chemicals
- dragging round sharp corners
-being trodden on sudden changes in pressure
-shutting off too quickly.

Q

What are the studs in the anchor cable for?

A

The studs prevent the individual links deforming (stretching) under stress.

Q

How would you secure an anchor for sea?

A

To secure an anchor for sea:
-Check windlass brakes are screwed up tight, the compressors are on and both cables are out of gear
-Attach the devil’s claw and hawse pipe covers
-cement spurling pipe covers or attach steel plates with proper
canvas covers.

Q

What signals may a vessel display to show that it is not safe to fire a rocket?

A

To show that it is not safe to fire asmaket exhibit:
* By day - code flag ‘B’
* by night - red light at the masthead
* in poor visibility - whistle signal ‘GU’

Q

When a BA party is entering a space attached to a lifeline, in the absence of voice communication equipment, what signals can they make?

A

A system of signals are set up by tugging on the lifeline:
1 pull - we advance
2 pulls - we stop
3 pulls - we return.

Q

What pre-donning checks would you make to a positive pressure
BA set before wearing?

A

Check the following:
1. Visual inspection of the equipment
2. don the face mask
3. open cylinder fully, check contents (80% or more is required)
4. close cylinder, holding breath, the gauge should not drop more than 10 bars in 10 seconds
5. open cylinder valve, breathing several times to check demand and exhalation valves
6. close cylinder valve and breathe, as air is being consumed whistle must sound between 40-45 bars.

Q

When rescuing a casualty from an enclosed space, what are your priorities?

A

Priorities in rescuing an enclosed space casualty are:
* Restoration of their air supply at the earliest opportunity, and
* unless the casualty is gravely injured, such as a broken back, removal from the space as quickly as possible.

16
Q

After a change of more than 25% of the ship’s crew, what drills should be held ?

A

If more than 25% of the crew have changed and have not participated in a drill in the previous month, then an abandon ship and fire drill must be held within 24 hours of leaving port.

17
Q

If a substance is described as ‘volatile’, what does this tell you?

A

It has a flashpoint below 60°C.

18
Q

In the northern hemisphere, if the wind was to veer from South West to West and increase in velocity, together with increasing cloud cover from the west and a falling barometer, what would this indicate?

A

These are the signs of an approaching depression (low pressure system).

19
Q

What is ‘deadweight’?

A

It is the weight in tonnes of cargo stores, fuel, passengers, crew and their effects which a vessel is able to carry.

20
Q

What is ‘gross tonnage’?

A

Gross tonnage is the overall size or capacity of a ship, as per the current tonnage convention, ie the total volumetric capacity in m3.

21
Q

What is ‘net tonnage’?

A

It is derived from gross tonnage by deducting non-earning spaces used for crew, navigation, machinery and fuel.

22
Q

How many fire hoses are required to be carried on a vessel?

A

At least one fire hose for every 30 metres of ship’s length, and a minimum of five. The total length of hoses must be greater than 60% of the ship’s length.
Each space available to passengers and crew is to be capable of being reached by two fire hoses.

23
Q

How many fire extinguishers are required on a vessel?

A

Sufficient number of portable extinguishers are required to place at least one in every part of the vessel, with a minimum of five in a vessel of 100 tons and over.

24
Q

What are the requirements for a deck foam system on an oil tanker?

A

The deck foam system on a tanker must:
-Be capable of delivering foam to the entire cargo tank area
-have sufficient foam to ensure at least 20 minutes of foam generation (30 minutes if no inert gas system is fitted)
-have a mixture of water to foam that does not exceed 12:1
-not have less than 4 applicators.

25
Q

1.25What ‘bridge’ publications are required to be carried on board
UK ships?

A

The following bridge publications are required:
* M Notices
* Mariners’ Handbook
* Sailing Directions
* Notices to Mariners
Nautical Almanac
* Navigational Tables
* List of Radio Signals
* List of Lights
* Tide Tables
* Tidal Stream Atlases
* Operating and maintenance instructions for navigational aids carried on board ship
* International Code of Signals.
