Idioms
idioms are special phrases or clusters of words that have meaning to particular cultural group or sub-group within a culture. these are different from “slang” in that slang changes quickly with time. idiomatic expressions are a form of figurative language that people use purposefully to”connect” readers or listeners with prior knowledge and sense of belonging. An idiom could be considered as something like a “secret code” shared by a large group of people. The young people learn he code as they grow and are exposed to more than social language. A knowledge of “idioms” and the use of “idiomatic expressions” is one sign or signal that a writer and speaker and listener is maturing in the use and understanding of language.
