What is a relief sculpture?
A three-dimensional work intended to be viewed from one side
What is a sculpture-in-the-round?
Sculpture intended to be seen from all sides.
What is a bas-relief sculpture?
A three dimensional object that doesn’t stick out much from the surface
What is greenware?
Clay that is completely dried and ready to fire in the kiln.
What does plastic mean?
A good working quality of clay that is soft and bendable
What is leather hard clay?
Clay that is dry enough to be stiff, but still contains some water
What is glaze?
A glaze coating that makes the clay waterproof
What is stoneware?
Clay with a higher maturing temperature and fewer impurities than earthenware; very strong material
What is earthenware?
Has a low maturing temperature, many chemical impurities (iron), and is the most plastic
What is porcelain?
Clay with a high maturing temperature that is similar to glass when fires
What are three basic sculpting techniques?
Coiling, pinching, and slab-building
What is a kiln?
An oven or furnace that heats to a high temperature and is used to fire clay
What is slip used for?
Attaching two pieces of clay
What is firing temperature?
The temperature at which clay becomes dense.
