For my first piece, I’m playing Rosalind, from As You Like by William Shakespeare. In this scene, Rosalind is interrupting an argument between Phebe and Silvius. Rosalind is trying to admonish Phebe but it isn’t having the desired effect.

Q

The characters objective in each scene performed.

Rosalind

A

Rosalind’s overall objective is to tell off Phebe because she doesn’t like the way she’s treating Silvius.

Also, staying hidden by being disguised as a male called Ganymede. I showed this objective in my scene by lowering my voice such as ‘No faith proud mistress’.

Another one of her objectives is to give Silvius self-respect through softening her tone and being nice to him for example calling him a ‘properer man’.

Q

The characters objective in each scene performed.

Izzy

A

Izzy’s overall objective is to offload because she’s been through a traumatic experience.

One of her objectives towards the beginning is to mask her true feelings with comedy and being awkward

But at the end of the scene, we realise what her true objective is that she wants people to tell her she’s not a bad person.

Q

What’s the role of the character within the context of each play as a whole?

Rosalind

A

Rosalind is the main character she’s also Shakespeare’s best heroine.

She’s the daughter of Duke Senior who has been exiled by his younger brother, Duke Federick, even though he is the rightful heir of the throne.

When Rosalind gets exiled too she decides to use her trip to the forest of Ardene to take control of her life.

She is in love with a person called Orlando he’s also in the forest of Arden he’s taking care of a guy called Adam.

This scene is set in the forest of Arden.

At the end of the play, Rosalind tricks Phebe and Silvius into getting married. Rosalind marries Orlando and Duke Federick changes his ways and returns the throne to Duke Senior.

Rosalind, she’s clever, she’s funny, she’s in control of her life, unlike some other Shakespeare characters.

Q

What’s the role of the character within the context of each play as a whole?

Izzy

A

BU21 tells you the story of a plane crash the play has six monologues my character is one of the six there are 3 men 3 women.
Stuart Slade’s play is based on verbatim theatre which is when people are recorded and written down exactly as they said it.
We find out all of them are interlocked through their monologues.
Stuart Slade is commenting on how people ‘come together’ in the wake of a disaster. But people have too many differences (and that’s social and economic) for it to be a real support.

Q

BU21 information

A

Izzy finds herself dating another one of the survivors, Alex but it’s not exactly real love. Since she defines herself on whether she has a boyfriend or not. And Alex is an arrogant banker whose girlfriend has died in the disaster. He even says that her sister is much better looking and that’s not very good.
Alex is one of the other monologues,
Izzy lost her mother she was the only person on that particular street to be killed during the attack. Lots of people died but only her Mum on that street. So Izzy feels like she was very unlucky.
Izzy and Alex move in together at the end of the play and are engaged.
Bu21 is all about human behaviour and how do we deal with collective grief.
