Q

Screen time

A

Bjelland et al. (2015)
* Two important family environmental factors:
parental rules and style of communication
* ~3000 10-12-yr-olds and parents from Belgium,
Germany, Greece, Hungary and Norway
* Use of rules associated with less time watching
TV/DVDs and less computer/games console time
* A controlling parenting style was related to greater
perceptions of excessive time on TV/DVDs and on
computer/games consoles
* An autonomy-supportive style was related to less
time watching TV/DVDs and less use of
computer/games console time

Q

substance misuse-

A

Newman et al. (2008) reviewed 15 studies looking
at use of alcohol, drugs and smoking in relation to
parenting style
* Authoritative parenting linked to decreased risk of drug
use; less likely to initiate smoking
* Increased risk of substance use if parents neglectful or
authoritarian
* Permissive parenting linked to increased drinking and
smoking
* Differences depending on who respondents were

Q

ER substance use

A

Berge 2016-
A study titled “Role of parenting styles in adolescent substance use: results from a Swedish longitudinal cohort study” examined the influence of different parenting styles on adolescent substance use. The study identified four parenting styles: authoritative (high responsiveness and demandingness), authoritarian (low responsiveness, high demandingness), indulgent (high responsiveness, low demandingness), and neglectful (low responsiveness and demandingness).
The findings indicated that a neglectful parenting style was associated with increased substance use among adolescents. However, after adjusting for other risk factors (SES, mental health, association with delinquent peers), parenting style was generally not a significant predictor of substance use outcomes, except that an authoritative parenting style was linked to less frequent drinking.

The study concluded that factors such as association with deviant peers and delinquent behavior might play a more crucial role in adolescent substance use than general parenting style.

Nagata et al., 2025- MONITORING more important than parenting styles

Caylan et al., 2021- Authoritative Parenting: Characterized by warmth and firm boundaries, this style is associated with reduced screen time in children. For instance, a study found that children with authoritative parents were less likely to engage in excessive screen use
