Could be argued that colonisation wasn’t primary motive but instead to fill out maps
However they then discovered all this gold and resource that exploration turned into colonisation
Trade reasons for interest in Africa
Prospect of trade through routes further inland was promising and led to discovery of resources
Once these trade routes had been secured, strategic interests arise as there is a need to protect them
Coal iron and timber needed to feed demands of British industry
Britain could exploit African goods, manufacture textiles and weapons to sell back to Africa
